Tu Gallery - Fantastic Animal Sculptural Furniture :: Jamie Russell

1-sadie-the-bitch-from-hell.jpgTu Gallery of Edmonton, Alberta is pleased to announce an exhibition of the work of Jamie Russell, one of this country’s most unique designer/makers of finely crafted furniture and one-of-a-kind objects in wood.

Running from March 8 to March 29, visitors will be able to view a menagerie of works in wood, including a monkey table, mud puppy bowl, free form tables & a gorgeous roll top desk.

The general public will have an opportunity to meet the artist at the opening reception to be held on March 8 from 12:00 to 4:00pm.

4-crooked-watcher-003.jpg Jamie is a “self directed learner” who started out as a cabinet maker in the early 1970’s. . Since 1993 he has been focusing on carving & building furniture with animal imagery & free formed vessels loosely based on seed pods. In this year he was given a grant to explore the use of animal figures in furniture. In six months he produced 10 pieces. These developed the style that Jamie uses today – simple, solid structures featuring sensual, humorous animal forms. He has spent most of his time since developing his skills and refining his aesthetic. The one thing that makes his work stand out is his strong sense of line.

Working on his own – Jamie tends to work in series. He occasionally plays with painted surfaces, if he feels the image needs them, but his first love and primary focus is naturally finished wood. Jamie lives in Saskatchewan & keeps in touch with the wider world through Emma Lake Collaborative Workshops & the Furniture Society. His work is available in half a dozen fine galleries across North America.

TU Gallery is a relatively new and dynamic venue specializing in handcrafted wood furniture, innovative picture framing, hand blown glass, metal art and expressive photography. Opened in 2005, the owners, Lorna and Alex Paterson, have taken a significant role in supporting the community of Canada’s studio furniture makers.
